Why have a professional index for your publication?

Nancy C. Mulvany, author of "Indexing Books", defines an index as, "a structural
sequence -- resulting from a thorough and complete analysis of text -- of
synthesized access points to all the information contained in the text.  The
structured arrangement of the index enables uses to locate information efficiently."

A reader is much more likely to utilize a publication if they can find the
information efficiently.

What is indexing?

From the American Society of Indexers (ASI) website:

"According to the British indexing standard (BS3700:1988), an index is a systematic
arrangement of entries designed to enable users to locate information in a document. The
process of creating an index is called indexing, and a person who does it is called an indexer.
There are many types of indexes, from cumulative indexes for journals to computer database
indexes."
  • "Indexes are among those necessary but never spectacular products of hard as well as
skilled work that can sometimes make the difference between a book and a good
book.  index review in Books Ireland, February 1994"
